The Braes Drummer is one of the first foals by
the top campdrafting sire ‘Musicman’ and was bred by
Steve and Patty Campbell of Manilla.
When Steve first rode Drummer as a 2year old he
believed the horse to have exceptional balance and talent.
All our horses have to be ‘useful’ in other words “earn
their keep”. It was always the intention to develop Drummer’s
ability as a competition horse as well as a back up for Jameison.
In his first season competitions, Drummer won all his working classes.
This was as a 3 year old and included the Supreme ridden Stock horse
at Castle Hill Show and the High point Stock horse at Hawksbury
show. His first season culminated in winning his working class at
the National Championships and being awarded reserve champion working
horse under 4yo.
As Jamieson was at stud, Steve started to rely a lot on Drummer
for his entertainment and education appearances. At his first Equitana
Drummer assisted Steve in his education segment, then went and let
Vicki Lawrie present him like a ‘show horse’ and then
tripped off to a ‘saddle fitting demo’. All taken in
his stride.
Drummer became loved by thousands of people who were amazed at
his role as ‘The colt from Old Regret’ in The Man From
Snowy River Arena Spectacular, which travelled around Australia
in late 2002. Drummer really loved his role and got better as the
show went on, adding his own touches of excitement. He even did
a ‘pee’ in almost every show, without fail, much to
the crowd delight.
Drummer has become very good at being ridden without a bridle (in
fact he prefers this to having a bit in his mouth!) and Steve has
used him at Agfest, Equitana and many of his clinics to demonstrate
how responsive a horse can become.
